Chemist Norman Hackerman leaves the presidency of the University of Texas at Austin to become Rice's 4th academic leader.  Internationally known as an expert in metal corrosion, Hackerman has previously worked on the Manhattan Project and developed equipment to homogenize milk.

During his tenure, President Hackerman draws attention to 4 critical areas of concentration by creating the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, the Shepherd School of Music, the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and the George R. Brown School of Engineering.
