1993 - 2004
PREPARING RICE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
right bracket

S. Malcolm Gillis becomes Rice's 6th president after a 25-year career teaching and applying economic analysis to public policy in 20 countries, teaching for 15 years at Harvard University and serving as economics professor and dean of the faculty of arts and sciences at Duke University.

Rice is well-prepared for the 21st century because President Gillis develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan that includes a foresighted investment in nano, bio, info and enviro sciences; an expansion of the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business; a dedication to diversity; numerous academic infrastructure improvements and new construction; a deeper involvement in the community; and a significant enhancement of Rice's international presence.
