Hanszen College, formerly West Hall, is named for Board member Harry Clay Hanszen. The college develops many Rice traditions: it is the 1st college to have a crest, and it is the birthplace of the Coffeehouse and KTRU. Each year on Crane Day, Hanszenites commemorate the morning a construction team nearly dropped a crane on the dorm, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 residents. When they aren’t in the quad enjoying the hammock or tire swing, or admiring the fierce Guardian statue, Hanszenites celebrate having that “ramma jamma.”
