Baker College, formerly East Hall, is named for Captain James A. Baker, the attorney who uncovered the murder plot surrounding William Marsh Rice's death and saved Rice's fortune so the Institute could be built. Baker College is known for its beautiful Shakespearean commons, its Bakershake Shakespeare plays in the spring and its annual crawfish boil. Despite their unusual "Baker 13" tradition, Bakerites assert Baker College has "class."
