Rice installs its 1st computer, a Litton LGP-30, and scholars in the mechanical and chemical engineering departments begin using it for their calculations.

That year Rice scientists also discuss a much more powerful "Los Alamos-type" computer when electrical engineering Associate Professor Martin Graham, from Brookhaven National Laboratories, begins to design and build hardware for the sophisticated R1 computer.
