1954

On January 1, Rice is leading Alabama in the Cotton Bowl 7-6; All-American Rice quarterback Dickie Maegle '55 (b. Moegle) is running down the Alabama line headed for the end zone; Alabama player Tommy Lewis jumps off the bench and tackles Maegle, then sits back down. The referee sees the illegal play, awards Rice the touchdown, and Rice wins the Cotton Bowl 26-6. Maegle goes on to play National League football for 7 seasons. Lewis's tackle may be the most famous illegal play in the sport's history.
