Rice finally builds a home for its president, in large part because William V. Houston agrees to become the Institute's 2nd president if the trustees build a house for him on campus. John Staub and J. T. Rather design the house that will be home to 5 Rice university presidents and their families: William Houston (1946-1960), Kenneth Pitzer (1961-1968), Norman Hackerman (1970-1985), George Rupp (1985-1993) and Malcolm Gillis (1993-2004).
