1918

Hubert Bray comes to Rice in 1916 as a teaching fellow. Two years later, he receives Rice’s 1st Ph.D. in mathematics. He stays on at Rice, becoming Professor and Head of Mathematics in 1935.  In 1959, upon his initial retirement, he is named to a unique position: Trustees Distinguished Professor of Mathematics. He continues teaching and retires again in 1970, at the age of 81.
