In the 1970s a nervous young woman approaches Professor Chandler Davidson after a sociology class one morning; she hands him a slip of paper and makes a request, “Would you call this number?” Professor Davidson soon discovers, from a male voice who answers his call, that “the gay students on campus want to form an officially recognized student group” and hope Dr. Davidson will be sponsor. He agrees.
By 1980 the Rice Gay/Lesbian Support Group (RG/LSG) organizes, and by 1983 it posts a photograph in the Campanile that shows the group beside Willy’s Statue. The next year, the group congregates in front of Carl Miles’s Sisters, then located in Jones College courtyard.
In 2009, the shy young woman – Annise Parker -- becomes Mayor of Houston.
