John B. Boles '65 returns to Rice as full professor in the History Department, after serving as visiting associate professor and visiting editor of the Journal of Southern History in 1983. He develops a large graduate training program in southern history. Author of many articles and 10 books, including the authoritative biography of Edgar Odell Lovett and The South Through Time: A History of an American Region, Boles is also editor or co-editor of 11 books and speaks widely on history, editing and teaching. Alumni fondly remember Boles's dynamic teaching style and superior mentoring skills and award him their Meritorious Service Award (1991), their Distinguished Alumni Award (2004) and their Gold Medal (2012). University honors include the Graduate Student Association Teaching Award (2004), the Presidential Mentoring Award (2006) and the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching (2007, 2009). Boles has held visiting appointments at Baylor and Leipzig universities and is an associate of Will Rice College. He is currently the William Pettus Hobby Professor of history and Editor of the Journal of Southern History.
