A student-run recycling center opens in November. Houstonians and the Rice community recycle paper, glass and plastic -- to clean up the environment and to make money for the university. By 1972 the project raises enough money to pay 4 student salaries; in 1974 the City of Houston hires Duana Markers, former Rice center director, to develop a recycling plan for Houston.
