Neal Lane, Malcolm Gillis University Professor and senior fellow in science and technology at the Baker Institute receives the National Academy of Sciences' most prestigious award--the Public Welfare Medal, established in 1914 to honor the extraordinary use of science for  the public good. Among his many accomplishments as director of the National Science Foundation (1993-1998) and director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (1998-2001), Lane supports the National Nanotechnology Initiative, nearly doubling the national expenditure in nanotechnology.
