Wiess House, the home of former board member Harry Carothers Wiess and his wife Olga Keith Wiess, reopens as the president's home. President David Leebron, his wife Y. Ping Sun and their children Daniel and Merissa take occupancy in June 2004 when they move to Houston.
William Ward Watkin designs the Mediterranean-style house for the Wiesses and their 3 daughters in 1920. Family members donate the home to Rice in 1976, but it is little used and suffers serious damage.
In January 2003, the Board authorizes the Wiess House and Gardens Renovation Project to restore the beauty and elegance befitting Houston's historically significant homes. On January 27, 2006, the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance presents Rice University a Good Brick Award for preserving this landmark.
