Rice announces a complete ban on hazing and on social clubs resembling fraternities and sororities. Both hazing and social clubs are thought to violate the university's democratic principles. Although President Lovett repeatedly tries to ban hazing, students continue the practice from the school's founding in 1912 until the College System begins operation in 1957.
