The family of the late George R. Brown, former chairman of the Rice University Board of Trustees, commissions "45°, 90°, 180°" by sculptor Michael Heizer for the George R. Brown School of Engineering quadrangle. Heizer collaborates with engineers Walter P. Moore and Associates and construction specialists Miner-Dederick to install 3 massive granite slabs (20 by 18 by 3 feet), quarried in Marble Falls, Texas, on concrete pedestals. Three 36-wheel flat-bed trucks transport the 70-ton slabs, and engineers shore up the tunnels running under that section of campus so the site will not cave in.
