On February 20 the trustees announce their choice for the man to succeed Kenneth Pitzer as president of Rice - William H. Masterson, a graduate of Rice, member of the history department and dean of humanities (1951-1966) until he becomes president of the University of Chattanooga. Faculty and students immediately protest a decision they view as unilateral and complain they are not being consulted. The "Masterson Crisis" ends 5 days later when Masterson resigns and history professor Frank E. Vandiver agrees to serve as president until the trustees can conclude a professional search to fill the post.
