Martin J. Wiener joins the Rice faculty in 1967 and later serves 2 terms as chairman of the History Department. In 1981 he publishes English Culture and the Decline of the Industrial Spirit, 1850-1980, which is an effective critique of the English elite for its indifference, if not hostility, to industrialism. The book is immensely controversial and influential in England, is widely translated and becomes a staple of political and economic debate. Wiener publishes 4 other books on modern British history.
