Ken Kennedy '67 joins the Mathematical Science Department. In 1984 he founds the Rice Computer Science Department, serving as its chair until 1989, when he becomes director of the Center for Research in Parallel Computing (CRPC). Kennedy is the number 1 person in parallel computing and changes "the entire landscape for high performing computing." He serves as co-chair of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 1997 to 1999. At his untimely death in December 2005, Kennedy is the John & Ann Doerr Professor of Computational Engineering.
