Trees on 47,000 acres of land in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana are cut down to pay for Rice's original campus buildings. Purchased in 1878 by William Marsh Rice, the land is later run by the Rice Land Lumber Company, which has operated a modern tree farm there since shortly after World War II.

Today, only 2,000 acres of the land are logged every year, reseeded and given 25 years to grow before the trees are cut again. In 2010, the land is enrolled by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in the Louisiana Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) (RCW) Safe Harbor Program.
