1983

Famous Hollywood film personality Dennis Hopper visits the Rice Media Center to discuss his new film Out of the Blue. In an unexpected twist, Hopper refuses to address the crowd in person but instead buses audience members to the Big H Speedway.

There he invites spectators to watch while he "blows himself up" in the Russian Dynamite Death Chair Act. An announcer blares, "Folks, he’ll sit in a chair with six sticks of dynamite and light the fuse.” Visibly impaired by alcohol and drugs, Hopper sits and tries to light a match; finally the entire matchbook blazes, igniting the explosion and Hopper disappears in billowing smoke.

The trick, which Hopper learned from a traveling roadshow, goes according to plan, and Hopper emerges unharmed.
