J. David Hellums  joins the Rice faculty. He goes on to chair the chemical engineering department for 6 years, becomes a founding member of the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory and its director for 10 years and serves as dean of engineering for 8 years. He is an adjunct professor at both Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
