Katherine Tsanoff Brown, who entered Rice at 15 and graduated in 1938, returns as the 1st art historian in the new Department of Art and Art History, becoming a professor of art history in 1975. She serves as dean of undergraduate affairs from 1973 to 1983 and retires from the department in June 1989. During her career, Professor Brown receives many teaching awards, including the George R. Brown Award for Excellence in Teaching. Even while dean, she teaches a full course load, continues as a practicing artist and promotes collegial relations between artists and art historians.
