At Rice's initial commencement, 35 graduates — 20 men and 15 women — receive degrees: 27 Bachelor of Arts, 8 Bachelor of Science and 1 Master of Arts in Mathematics. 3 out of the 4 degrees awarded with honors go to women, and 2 of those women are mathematics majors. President Lovett designs the diploma.
