On July 1, George Erik Rupp begins his tenure as Rice University's 5th president (1985-1993) and is inaugurated October 25. He comes to Rice from Harvard Divinity School, where he was the Lord O'Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean. During his tenure, applications triple, federal research dollars double and the endowment grows by $500 million. Rupp reemphasizes ideals established by President Lovett: to accept outstanding students; to intensify research, scholarship and professional excellence; and to serve the community. During his tenure, Rupp improves the curriculum, strengthens graduate programs, promotes interdisciplinary activity and faculty and initiates new construction projects.
