In March Stephen L. Klineberg, member of the Sociology Department since 1972, directs his students in the 1st "Houston Area Survey," developed to track changes in Houston's demographic patterns and to understand the region's life experiences, attitudes and beliefs. Now the nation's largest study of any metropolitan region's economy, population and traditions, the Survey spurs creation of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research in February 2010. Klineberg combines path-breaking research with teaching skills that garner 10 teaching awards, including the George R. Brown Lifetime Award for Excellence in Teaching.
