In April 1975 the Brown Foundation challenges Rice donors to lift their levels of giving dramatically and to make a "commitment to the future of Rice University." The Brown Foundation Challenge, to take effect for the calendar year 1976, is a 10-year, $20 million grant that matches the gifts of other Rice donors. Through a complex formula of matches, incentives and awards, Rice raises $1,325,000, and the Foundation donates $1,350,000 the 1st year. In 1986 the Foundation extends the challenge for another decade. Through 1995 the Brown Foundation Challenge brings $53 million to Rice, and the matching grants formula attracts millions from individual donors.
