With enrollment climbing to 3,279 (2,655 undergraduates and 624 graduate students), Hackerman creates the Office of Advanced Studies and Research to coordinate graduate programs, research proposals and administration and continuing studies. He also organizes the Department of Biochemistry (now the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology) and names George Schroepfer chairman.
