Tennis champion Jake Hess '31 lends his support and name to the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. While Rice undergraduates, Jake and his brother Wilbur bring star status to the Rice tennis program. Jake is the 1st Rice All-America tennis player (1932), and Wilbur takes the singles crown as 1st NCAA champion in 1937.
The state-of-the-art stadium receives a facelift in 2005 that includes high-quality lighting for night-time competition. In 2006 the athletic department resurfaces the courts in Rice blue.
