Brown College, the 2nd residential college for women, opens. Named for Margaret Root Brown, the wife of Herman Brown, the college receives funding from the Brown Foundation, and Brown & Root constructs the building. George R. Brown family members donate paintings and antique furniture for the 1st floor public areas. Brown College sponsors 2 of Rice's most anticipated public parties, Bacchanalia and "Margaritaville." Brownies also hold their own annual College Night, a daylong event during which residents attend classes in outrageous costumes and return to their quad for an evening celebration.
